Firearms account for the greatest proportion of suicide deaths, just over one third of all cases. 32% of suicides are from hanging, 10% from poisoning and 7% from gassing.
Statistics on firearm-related injuries can provide information about the deceased only. Although we refer to this person as the victim, without definitive knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the injury it is often difficult in the case of homicide to determine whether the deceased was in fact an innocent victim of firearm violence or whether he/she was the perpetrator of some crime who was killed during the incident.
