HQ-110A

Home Up HX-50 HQ-110A HQ-129-X

This is a good looking HQ-110A receiver owned by Skyview Radio Society.  This radio has been repaired cleaned and aligned in preparation for sale.  The sale is to raise funds for Skyview and will be listed by their representative (not me).  My efforts were make this ready for sale.  This is not a restoration but a repair.  Restoration will be up to the choice of the new owner.

Overall this radio receives well on all bands.  SSB seems a bit easier to tune in than other vintage BFO radios that I have restored.  The front panel is in great shape with some of the lettering restored with what appears to be dry rub transfer lettering.  The surrounding perforated case looks to be freshly painted.  The BFO, Q-multiplier, function switches all work as expected.

The check out and repair:

  1. First all the tubes tested good and strong on a Heathkit emissions tester.

  2. Next all electrolytic capacitors passed an ESR test with low resistance.

  3. Those capacitors were also checked with a modern digital cap tester for proper capacitance.

  4. I replace two bad out of tolerance carbon composition resistors R44 and R23 both supplying B+ to V2 and V6A.

  5. The Q multiplier frequency knob had a missing stop pin.  I epoxied a new stop pin inside the shielding.

  6. YES, the clock works!  The broken/short clock time set shaft was extended back out the rear by using an aluminum tube and plumbers epoxy so the clock can be set with out removing the cabinet.

  7. All switches and variable resistors cleaned with contact cleaner.

  8. A full end to end alignment.

  9. Play time.  I listened to the Breezeshooters Monday Night Net on 28.480 mHz.

Some thing a new owner may want to consider.

This radio does receive well as is.  The S-meter seems a little sluggish (it was calibrated).  I believe an end to end restoration where all carbon composition resistors and all paper containing capacitors were replaces would solve this. And perhaps increase its sensitivity on all bands even more than it is after my alignment.

Removing two owner added antenna connectors.   This is optional and recommended only if you want original configuration.  Otherwise these connectors are very convenient.  I would personally use them.

Repairing or restoring all the missing lettering with dry rub or water slide decals.  For example Radio Daze has a generic set.  I would be best to call them and ask about this radio.  They have been very helpful to me in the past.  Not all decals they carry are listed.

All in all in my opinion this is an excellent radio, the perfect candidate for a restoration.  All the alignment point have room to move (none at their extreme).  Practically un-touched under-chassis, mostly original.  The biggest problem I had was some one played with all the upper chassis access alignment slugs.  But that was my burden.  They are all where they should be now.

The new owner can wait to restore this radio.  Use it now and get the feel of the old vintage Hammarlund HQ-110A and restore it later.  But keep in mind, the vast majority of the part in this radio are original and are subject to failure at any time.
