New Hi-Fi Headphone Amp Provides Ultra-Low DistortionTexas Instruments Introduces Four New Audio Power AmplifiersDALLAS (Aug. 17, 1998) -- Four new stereo audio power amplifiers (APAs) from Texas Instruments (TI) offer designers greater flexibility in choosing the desired levels of power consumption and fidelity for their systems. With a total of 13 devices, TI's APA portfolio allows designers to select the right solution for their audio system, without compromise. The new offerings include the TPA152, a single-ended APA that delivers clean, crisp sound to high-fidelity stereo headphones for portable compact disc (CD) players, notebook computers, and voice recorders. The TPA152 also serves as an output buffer for audio coder/decoders (codecs) in PCs, and in applications where a high-performance headphone/line-out amplifier is needed. In addition, the new TPA102, TPA112 and TPA122 (TPA1x2) APAs provide high-quality stereo output with low-power consumption for 8-Ohm speakers and headphones. The TPA1x2 devices feature common APA pinouts to facilitate the enhancement of existing battery operated designs with the use of these components. "The TPA152 is the high-fidelity solution for headphones today," said Don Dapkus, Systems Architect, Audio Amplifier Products, Texas Instruments. "This family reinforces TI's focus on delivering integrated APA solutions in innovative packaging, which provide customers a competitive edge in low power applications." High Fidelity, Low Voltage With an extremely low total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) of less than 0.2 percent across the entire audio band, the TPA152 is among the highest-fidelity solutions available for driving headphones. For 10 Kilo Ohm loads, THD+N drops to just 0.005 percent at 1 kHz. With an output drive of 75 milliWatts (mw) per channel into a 32-Ohm load, the TPA152 is well suited for use in a variety of mobile, desktop and consumer applications. The other members of the family operate from a supply of 2.5 to 5 volts. Each device delivers 150 mw of stereo output from an ultra small MSOP package. The TPA102 and TPA122 are optimized for PC power supplies and offer a shutdown mode, which minimizes supply current to 10 micro Amps. The TPA112 is optimized for audio applications that require a standard op amp pinout. All four new APA devices also feature an integrated mid-rail generator that internally biases the reference voltage, eliminating several external components for savings in board space and system cost. A mute pin is also integrated, which instantly dampens output to headphones. Finally, integrated depop circuitry on the TPA152, TPA102 and TPA122 eliminates popping and clicking noises when the device is turned on or off, or transitions into or out-of-mute mode. Tools and Support All of TI's APA products are supported by evaluation modules (EVMs) that plug directly into TI's Plug 'n Play APA EVM. TI also offers its free Audio Power Program to assist designers in defining the power requirements of their audio systems and determining the best characteristics of power amplifiers for their needs. The Audio Power Program can be downloaded from the Internet at www.ti.com/sc/docs/msp/tools/audio.htm Availability, Packaging and Suggested Resale Pricing TI's TPA152, TPA102, TPA112 and TPA122 are all available now from TI and authorized distributor. Additionally, TI offers an APA solution to meet every design need. Following is a listing of devices currently available:
