New Texas Instruments Single-Chip Switching Devices Bring Performance and Cost Advantages to Small Offices and Gigabit NetworksDALLAS (Oct. 19, 1998) -- Two new single-chip networking solutions for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet applications were announced today by Texas Instruments (TI). The first device enables affordable Ethernet 10/100 performance in small office networks. The second device is a multi-gigabit solution for high-demand network uplinks and switches. Both devices are part of the continued roadmap fulfillment of TI's ThunderSWITCH portfolio of networking silicon solutions. "TI's highly integrated ThunderSWITCH II product family delivers cost-effective network performance without sacrificing features, functionality or flexibility," said Lori Schnier, product marketing manager at TI. "The TNETX4080 provides the features necessary to meet the needs of the low-port density desktop connections. The TNETX4020 offers gigabit uplink capabilities and interoperates seamlessly with TI's TNETX4090, the industry's first 10/100/1000-megabit per second (Mbps) switch device." ThunderSWITCH II TNETX4080 + Low-Cost Fast Ethernet for Small Networks
![]() The new eight-port TNETX4080 device enables a per-port silicon cost of less than $10 for 10/100-Mbps Ethernet switches. It meets the needs of networking vendors who want to offer high performing Fast Ethernet switches at a price point affordable for offices with less than 50 user ports. The TNETX4080 also offers an integrated management port, giving equipment designers the flexibility to create both inexpensive, unmanaged and value-added, managed products. ThunderSWITCH II TNETX4020 + Scalable Performance for Gigabit Networking
![]() The TNETX4020 offers two ports, each delivering 1-Gbps switching with non-blocking operation. This device can be used in two applications: to create a gigabit uplink for Ethernet switches, or to create switches that offer multi-gigabit performance. To create a gigabit switch, multiple TNETX4020 devices can be connected in a cascade ring mode. Although the ThunderSWITCH architecture allows connection of an unlimited number of devices in this fashion, a typical switch configuration could offer eight user ports. Building on the Market-Leading Features of the TNETX4090 All TI ThunderSWITCH products offer the guaranteed interoperability of a common architecture and similar feature sets, which simplify development of equipment that addresses a broad range of Ethernet networking needs. Both of the new devices in this family offer high-speed, performance and features similar to the TNETX4090GGP device for 10/100/1000-Mbps switching, announced by TI in June 1998. These features include support for the latest Ethernet standards, multiple Media Access Control (MAC) addresses and virtual LANs (VLANs), half- and full-duplex flow control, an integrated management port, and a direct input/output interface with direct memory access capabilities. In addition, the ThunderSWITCH II family of devices utilizes RAMBUS™ memory, which allows for superior performance while still providing a low system cost. "TI's ThunderSWITCH II product family offers the greatest depth and breadth of standard silicon switching solutions in the market with the ability to address speeds from 10-Mbps to gigabit Ethernet," said Schnier. "The ThunderSWITCH II products give designers the ability to build tomorrow's advanced networking systems today." Pricing and Availability Samples and volume production for the TNETX4080 are scheduled for December 1998; it will be available from TI and its authorized distributors. TI plans to price the chip at $55 per unit in quantities of 10,000. The TNETX4080 will be delivered in a 352 ball grid array (BGA) package; design schematics and an example bill of materials are also available from TI. The TNETX4020 is scheduled to be sampling in December 1998, with volume production scheduled for first quarter 1999. Price for the device is planned at $90 per unit in quantities of 10,000. The TNETX4020 will be available from TI in a 208-pin quad flat package (QFP). TI will include this device on an add-in card for the TNETX4090GGP reference kit, which also includes application notes and application design team assistance to help networking OEMs achieve faster time-to-market and volume production.
