Client Compatibility Chart

Unfortunately, some older AppleShare clients are not compatible with newer servers. This page lists the older Apple clients that I and others have tested against some popular servers. I'm afraid that I don't have the time to test PC AppleShare clients but please mail me if you know whether a combination works or not.

My definition of whether a client/server combination works is the ability to read and write files on the server. Problems and limitations are listed as Notes.

Mac OS X Workstation

AppleTalk file sharing is not supported by default with Mac OS X. For configuring peer to peer sharing on a Mac OS X system, follow the instructions at System 6 Heaven http://www.euronet.nl/users/mvdk/osx.html. Initial compatibility tests suggest that all versions of Mac OS X after 10.1 work in the same way.

2005 Note: this text is left as a place holder. Mac OS X now no longer supports older Mac clients.
