Inexpensive programmable modems

Product: DSP-based modem chipset
TI DSP: TMS320C203
Third party: Signals and Software Limited
Success achieved: DSP programmability creating design flexibility and    upgradability in low-cost modem chipset.

Signals and Software Limited has announced the introduction of a very-low-cost DSP-based modem chipset designed to compete with products that are available from modem chipset manufacturers such as Rockwell Semiconductors and Lucent Technologies.

Based on TI’s TMS320C203 DSP, the chipset implements all data and fax modem standards up to and including V.34, which provides 33.6-Kbps data transmission. Development is in progress to provide 56-Kbps V.90 operation with a software upgrade that will be available later this year. An optional microcontroller provides a fully Hayes-compatible AT command interface along with error correction and data compression.

The chipset will be available in various configurations, with options for EPROM or host-downloadable firmware and the inclusion of a control processor. Customer support will include the ability to customize the product to meet specific client requirements.
