1394 at Comdex 1997
Texas Instruments was one of many 1394 Trade Association members
that attended Comdex '97. Many companies, including Texas
Instruments, showed off 1394 demos featuring their silicon or end products
in the 1394 Trade Association room.
Below is a few of the 1394 Demos that Texas Instruments showed at the
event and a list of the lucky winners of Texas Instruments TSBKPCI
1394 Designer Kits.
1394 CD-ROM
The Toshiba CD-ROM transmits image data to the PC via the 1394 interface. This demo illustrates the operational ability for a plug-and-play device that requires power over the 1394 interface.
The Toshiba CD-ROM is the industry’s first 1394 enabled CD-ROM device. It utilizes the TSB12C01A link layer and the TSB11C01 100Mbps PHY. The Extensa notebook utilizes the TSB12LV21A (PCILynx) and the TSB21LV03A 200Mbps PHY.
1394 Video to Removable HDD
DV data is transmitted from the Sony VX1000 DV camcorder via TI’s 1394 Link and Physical Layer devices.
The DV data is received by the TSBKGPLynx Designer Kit through the TSB12LV31 -GPLynx and theTSB21LV03A 200Mbps Phy.
The TSBKGPLYNX communicates with a SCSI board through the PC-104 interface, and stores the DV data to the removable HDD.
DV data is displayed by reversing the data flow.
Pavo's Papaya Audio over 1394
The Papaya audio processor is a plug-and-play interface between the PC and current A/V equipment.
Audio data is transmitted from the PC via TI’s TSB12LV21A PCILynx and TSB21LV03A 200Mbps phy.
The audio data is presented to the Papaya DSP through TI’s TSB12C01A and 100Mbps phy.
The audio formats that can be decoded by Papaya include Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro-logic, and Dolby AC-3
DSS data from PC to STB
DSS data is stored from the STB to the PC HDD via the 1394 interface.
To re-play the data, the DSS stream is played from the HDD using the TSB12LV21A -PCILynx, TSB21LV03A 200Mbps phy, and software application written using TI’s LynxSoft API
The STB receives the data through the TSB12LV41 - MPEG2Lynx and TSB21LV03A 200Mbps phy, and presents the data to the TMS320AV7100 STB decoder chip.
TI Storage Products Group (SPG) 1394 Native Bridge
This photo displays two applications using TI SPG's
39C1011, 1394 Native Bridge. The full size evm board
(top left) is connected to a WD EIDE Hard Disk Drive,
and is system is running on NT5.0. Monitor, using MY
COMPUTER icon, shows that the drive has been recognized
and enumerated as a drive. It then performs all expected
functionality of a standard EIDE drive. The 39C1011
translates IEEE1394 to EIDE. The evm consists of The
39C1011, TI TSB21LV03A PHY, TI TMS320C203 DSP, and
Flash to accomplish this functionality. An integrated
single chip version is scheduled for next year.
Also, shown in this photo is a Device Bay Box, again, with
a WD EIDE drive. Here, the full size evm has been reduce
to meet the Device Bay form factor.
TI Storage Products Group (SPG) 1394 Tailgate Solution
The Tailgate EVM boards connects an IDE HDD and an ATAPI CD-ROM
drive using one IDE cable to 1394. The Tailgate, 39C1010,
supports the Tailgate protocol with hardware assisted translation.
The software running continues loops between the IDE HDD and CD-ROM
drive perform drive commands to the IDE and ATAPI packet to the
CD-ROM drive.
