TI offers a complete USB solution for your office peripherals

Texas Instruments is an industry leader in Universal Serial Bus (USB) solutions that free users by combining the PC's many circuit interfaces and cables into a single, easy-to-use connector. Now, several new products from TI -- including a four-port hub controller and several power management devices -- augment the industry's most comprehensive USB product offering. Two new USB power management devices give designers of personal computers and peripheral equipment the ability to protect PC users from electrical damage caused by electrical surges, short circuits and over-current and over-temperature conditions.

"USB frees users by combining the PC's many circuit interfaces and cables into a single, easy-to-use connector."

Part of TI's extensive line of USB host and peripheral ICs, the TPS2014 and TPS2015 are designed specifically for low- to medium-speed peripheral devices and provide the power management and protection against accidental electrical damage that are critical for equipment reliability.

Another new USB power device, the SN75240 dual-port electrical transient suppressor protects PCs with USB against electrostatic discharge (ESD) as peripherals are plugged and unplugged from the host system. The device complements the TPS2014/15 power management devices and increases the tolerance of noise transients that may be induced on the USB signal lines.

The TPS2014 and the TPS2015 are USB-specific power switches that provide maintenance-free protection against electrical damage and high temperatures, increasing system reliability and reducing repair costs of PC and peripheral equip-ment. When the device detects an over-current condition, they automatically limit the current to a specified safe level. The host, USB or hub controller uses the fault signal on the TPS2014/15 to monitor the system voltage bus and provide feedback to the system interface where the distribution switches have an integrated 95-ohm MOSFET power switch, which meets the USB limitations for voltage drop and regulation.

TI is also announcing sampling of a four-port USB hub controller with Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) bus circuitry for USB control of operating characteristics like brightness, contrast and vertical hold. The TUSB2140 is designed to be used in a PC's monitor.
