Bus switch provides docking supportThe new CBTD16210 Bus Switch from Texas Instruments keeps data moving fast in 3.3-V PCIbus applications that dock to 5-V stations. The 20-bit switch features a propagation delay of only 250 ps, plus an internal diode to Vcc that provides voltage translation without additional devices. For typical docking applications such as notebook computers, the CBTD16210 provides an ideal solution for isolating the notebook bus from the docking station during connection and disconnection. ![]() The CBTD16210 serves as a 5-ohm switch connection between two ports. Since the device is organized as dual 10-bit switches with separate output-enable (OE) inputs, it can be used as either two 10-bit bus switches or a single 20-bit bus switch. An internal diode supports voltage translation without the need for additional components. Because of the device's speed, virtually no propagation delay occurs with bidirectional translation between 5-V TTL and 3.3-V LVTTL signals or undirectional translation from 5-V CMOS to 3.3-V LVTTL signals. When accepting a 5-V signal, the CBTD16210's internal diode drops the 5-V signal to about 4.3 V. In addition, the transistor's gate-to-gate source voltage drop of 1 V brings Vout to 3.3 V. The CBTD16210's internal diode design does not alter 3.3-V LVTTL signals. Even with the diode and the gate-to-gate source voltage drop, the CBTD16210 allows a maximum swing up to 3.3 V, which satisfies the Vih requirements for 5-V TTL. In this way, the CBTD16210 is a bidirectional level shifter, ideal for use in mixed-voltage bus isolation designs. For complete information, order: CBTD16210 Data Sheet (SCDS049B).
