The latest word in WirelessAnalog cellular solution integrates audio, data processing
TI is sampling a new single-chip audio and data processor that reduces power consumption and cost in analog cellular phones. The TCM8030 Baseband Processor for analog cellular telephones handles the audio and data processing required for an analog cellular phone or the analog mode in a mixed-mode analog and digital cellular phone. On-chip functions that reduce component count include:
The processor supports all major analog cellular standards worldwide, including the Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS), Total Access Communications System (TACS) and Narrowband AMPS (NAMPS). Operating from 2.7- to 5.5-V, the mixed-signal CMOS TCM8030 combines two existing highly integrated baseband devices, simplifying design, assembly and test for faster time-to-market. The processor communicates with a wide range of microcontrollers, giving OEMs flexibility in designing inexpensive entry-level phones or differentiated high-end phones. Power saving modes allow most sections of the phone and of the device itself to be powered down when not in use. For example, the TCM8030 independently monitors base station traffic during idle modes, allowing the microcon-troller to sleep while waiting for incoming calls. The TCM8030 is packaged in an 80-pin thin quad flatpack (TQFP) and is sampling now, with volume production planned for third quarter 1997.
