Product Description

The TSB14C01A is a 5V, one port backplane transceiver/arbiter that supports backplane 1394 data transfer rates of 50/100 Mbps. It performs system initialization and arbitration functions, as specified by the IEEE-1394-1995 High Performance Serial Bus Standard.

The TSB14C01A is not designed to drive the backplane directly, so this function must be provided externally.

The TSB14C01A is designed to interface with a link layer controller (LLC), such as the TSB12C01A. The data interface to the LLC is provided through two parallel lines operating at 50 Mbps, and all LLC interface lines support IEEE Annex J optional electrical isolation.

Target Applications

Backplane Environments

The 1394 BackPlane Serial Bus (BPSB) plays a supportive role in backplane bus systems, specifically Futurebus+, VME64 and proprietary backplane bus systems. This supportive role can be grouped into five categories:

DIAGNOSTICS: alternate control path to the parallel backplane bus; test, maintenance and troubleshooting; software debug and support interface
SYSTEM ENHANCEMENT: fault tolerance; live insertion; CSR access; auxiliary bus to the parallel backplane bus
JTAG SUPPORT: speed up JTAG I/O testing and production verification
PERIPHERAL MONITORING: Monitoring of peripherals (disk drives, fans, power supplies, etc. in conjunction with 1394 cable serial bus.
TINY AREA NETWORD (TAN): Communication between peripherals and hosts in close proximity (72m) to one another.

The TSB14C01A provides a way to add 1394 connections to almost any backplane. Development Kits are available from TI that can be used as a starting point for design.
