Permedia2 3D Graphics Processor

The TVP4020 is TI's second generation graphics controller to incorporate PERMEDIA graphics technology from 3Dlabs. 3Dlabs is an acknowledged leader in high-performance, workstation-class 3D graphics processors and is renowned for its superior software drivers. TI offers leadership in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and Mixed Signal Products along with world-class semiconductor manufacturing facilities. The jointly-designed TVP4020 combines the best of 3Dlabs and TI to produce leading edge performance at an affordable price.

The TVP4020 brings the type of visual realism previously found only in high-end workstations to a variety of consumer and commercial applications, including PC games, virtual reality and virtual world wide web browsing.

It integrates the three most important graphics functions required by these demanding applications:

Advanced video processing

The TVP4020 includes both PCI and AGP bus interfaces for design flexibility with today's emerging 3D graphics standards.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE 3D

The TVP4020 integrates the 3Dlabs Delta™ 3D Geometry Pipeline Processor into the PERMEDIA core yielding:

1 million polygons/second
80 million pixels/second

positioning it as a premier 3D graphics processor. It incorporates a single-pixel divide function for faster perspective correction and an 8-bit color texture palette that reduces memory requirements by texture compression. Faster Z-buffered modes also improve overall 3D performance.

LEADING 2D ACCELERATION

The TVP4020 operates as a Windows™ accelerator and includes fast SVGA capabilitites on-chip, yielding approximately 100 million WinMarks.

The TVP4020's sophisticated 3D pipeline can process special 2D features, such as texture units for tiled blits, chroma key test for transparent blits and bilinear filter for stretch blits, for fast 2D performance.

ADVANCED VIDEO PROCESSING

The TVP4020 includes video features, such as XY scaling and filtering , to manipulate and display live video on either a full screen or inside a window. When connected to an external video decoder and encoder, the TVP4020 supports simultaneous live TV input and output channels for applications such as video conferencing and video editing.

The TVP4020 is also capable of high-resolution (1024 x 768) MPEG1 and 2 playback at a full 30 frames/second using a CPU-based software decoder. An integrated YUV to RGB color space converter reduces CPU and bus loading.

INTEGRATED RAMDAC

The TVP4020 integrates TI's award-winning 230 MHz RAMDAC, which supports all popular screen resolutions and refresh rates up to 1600 x 1200 pixels at 83Hz.

ROBUST SOFTWARE DRIVERS

The TVP4020's pipeline allows acceleration of both Direct3D and OpenGL APIs. In addition, proprietary libraries are not required to develop textured, full screen game play and animations at more than 30 frames per second. The TVP4020 is 100% software compatible with the TVP4010.
