VIDEO OUTPUT USING THE TVP6000

The TI TVP6000 NTSC/PAL Video Encoder converts digital into analog video that is ready for display on a television.

Key features:

  • Flicker filter (3-tap)
  • Overscan compensation filter (0-12%)
  • Square pixel and CCIR (ITU-601) sampling formats
  • Multiple input formats:
    • 8-bit 4:2:2 YCbCr
    • 16-bit 4:2:2 YCbCr
  • Composite and S-video outputs
  • Genlock support for accurate color on nonstandard video sources, such as a VCR.

The TVP6000 can act as a master or slave on the digital video bus and it offers the following standard interfaces:

  • ITU-R-656 (Bit-parallel)
  • VMI Video Port
  • VMI Control Port (I2C)

The flicker filter and overscan compensation filters are important features for PC based video. Computer imagery designed for display on a progressive-scan computer monitor often contains fine lines, which flicker when displayed on an interlaced TV. The flicker filter smoothes these fine lines while maintaining adequate detail.

Televisions also truncate about 5% of the incoming video signal, commonly referred to as overscanning. Computer monitors, on the other hand, display the entire image, so computer graphics devices fill the entire video signal with information. Therefore, if a computer image is displayed on a TV, critical information may be lost in the overscan process. The TVP6000's overscan compensation filter pre-scales the computer imagery for proper display on a television.

A typical PC application of the TVP6000 is shown below. The device accepts digital video from the graphics controller in one of several formats. The device converts the digital into analog video while applying the flicker filter and overscan compensation filter.
