Wavetek using Virtuoso Micro with 'C44

A new range of test and measurement instruments targeted at telecom applications such as mobile phones has recently been introduced by Wavetek Instruments. The instruments use TMS320C44 DSPs for onboard signal processing, together with Virtuoso Micro, a real-time operating system (RTOS) from Eonic Systems.

Featuring flexibility and easy reprogram-mability, Virtuoso Micro is particularly well suited to get the maximum performance from TI DSPs.

The flexibility of an RTOS, together with the reuse of code it makes possible, are important advantages in the telecom market, where standards evolve rapidly and instruments must be ready long before the product is launched.

Virtuoso Micro provided Wavetek maximum performance with minimum overhead. The RTOS includes about 70 kernel services and supports pre-emptive scheduling, semaphores, queues, mailboxes, and other functions, with a code size of approximately 4.5k words. The microkernel has support not only for extremely fast interrupt handling for fast data acquisition, but provides for modular development of the man-machine interface independently from the processing tasks. Parameter changes or user settings are easily passed on to the relevant tasks without rewriting the program. In addition, background tasks that run diagnostic checks without affecting the instru-ment 's performance are easy to integrate.
