Computer vision for vehicles

CARTRACK is a specialized stereo vision system used for automatic vehicle guidance that can reliably detect, track and measure front or rear views of automobiles in a dynamic image. There are four major visual tasks the system has to cope with:

  • Detecting leading cars or other objects on the road
  • Accurate measurement of the dynamic image size of the individual cars being tracked
  • Visual tracking of the objects while their image position and size vary greatly
  • Classification of objects that are being tracked
In the photo above, the leading car in the center is being tracked and its size is measured. The left car has just been detected and tracking is initialized.

Real-time operation for such applications is achieved with an eight-processor, TMS320C40-based VME system. The video signals are received by special TIM-40 processor nodes which incorporate digitizer chips and frame buffers. Stereo-image acquisition is achieved by RGB color digitizers providing up to three-channel simultaneous image capture.

"3L Parallel C, the multiprocessor upgrade to the TI tools, was chosen as the software development platform. It allowed much faster development than using the basic TI tools and supports easy integration of the image processing subsystem into a PC environment," said Thomas Zielke, president of C-Vis.

VISIONBUMBER and SIDEVIEW are other video-based obstacle detection systems for short-range, all-around surveillance of automatically guided vehicles. Applications include blind-spot surveillance and lane-keeping assistance.
