Postal sorting application uses LSI Linescan Module

In order to create sophisticated systems for postal sorting and routing, a large European company turned to Loughborough Sound Images (LSI) for technology based on TI DSPs. Nearly 200 of the systems are planned for installation by a major national postal service, specifically for large envelopes.

Announcing the agreement, Kevin Pott, European sales manager for LSI, said: "The customer was seeking to adopt optical character recognition to ensure accurate mail-sorting. Our experience in pattern recognition and image-processing techniques made LSI the obvious choice to develop the pre-processing stage of the equipment."

Required to provide a digital-camera interface, LSI designed a custom module that fits directly onto an existing neural network system. Based on LSI 's MDC40IL linescan TIM-40 module, the custom module consists of a digital-camera interface, a TMS320C40 DSP with SARAM line-store memory and SRAM, and an interface to the host system, as well as proprietary programming to perform image formatting and data-handling tasks.

The standard MDC40IL module provides four analog-to-digital converters for use with analog cameras, 0.5 Mbytes of SRAM and up to 16 Mbytes of DRAM, and is supplied as standard with a C function library for ease of use. The module may be used with PC or VME carrier boards from LSI 's extensive range and can be combined into powerful processing systems with other TIM-40 modules.
