The Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) analog standard has been
around in North American for more than twenty years. As a result, this
system's infrastructure deployment is very mature. Although this
standard does not provide as high of spectral efficiency as do the
most popular digital standards, AMPS capability is often integrated
within digital handsets to provide the user with flexible roaming
capability. AMPS employs an analog Frequency Modulation (FM) scheme
with a channel spacing of 30 KHz.
