x2: special delivery

TI, 3Com/U.S. Robotics pick up the pace in delivering new high-speed modems

With the help of Texas Instruments, 3Com/U.S. Robotics is leading the way in providing advanced high-speed modems.

And through its x2 "Delivers More" campaign, USR is offering $50 mail-in rebates on Sportster and Courier 56 Kbps desktop modems purchased until Oct. 4. Rebate requests must be postmarked by Nov. 15.

The x2 modems are powered by TI's Digital Signal Processing Solutions (DSPS) chipsets, of which TI recently shipped more than 13 million to manufacturers such as 3Com/U.S. Robotics, Packard Bell, Dell, Gateway 2000, NEC, Acer, IBM and many others.

The campaign also includes a 30-day, money-back guarantee on USR 56 Kbps modems purchased after June 1, 1997, and a free upgrade to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) 56K standard after its approval, which is expected in early 1998. All USR modems with x2 built in and those previously upgraded to x2 are eligible, regardless of purchase date.

USR is a major provider of modems and remote access equipment. Its x2 is the most widely used 56 Kbps technology. Paired with an Internet Service Provider (ISP), the powerful x2 modem allows for surfing the Internet and downloading e-mail, complex graphics and audio and video files in nearly half the time.

Currently, x2 is used by more than 800 ISPs in more than 2,493 cities worldwide. AOL Networks, a subsidiary of America Online, recently joined with USR to provide x2 technology for the large dial-up network AOLnet. Packard Bell NEC, Inc. is making x2 technology more readily available to consumers by adding it to Packard Bell and NEC brand computers.
