TI adds RF product line to wireless portfolio

Wireless PhoneWith the introduction of a new family of RF products, TI can now provide all the major system blocks for digital cellular, Personal Communications Systems (PCS) and digital cordless phone applications. The move further establishes TI as a leading supplier of Digital Signal Processing Solutions (DSPS) in the wireless market, which is experiencing explosive growth worldwide.

The RF devices, ranging from receivers to amplifiers (see below), are designed for optimal performance with TI's digital and analog baseband solutions and will reduce system power consumption, component counts and time-to-market.

"TI is focused on Digital Signal Processing Solutions, which enable wireless communications systems manufacturers to win in their markets," said Gilles Delfassy, general worldwide manager of TI's Wireless Communications Business Unit and vice president of the Semiconductor Group.

Major RF functions included

TI is building a family of receivers, synthesizers, modulators and power amplifiers that will perform all of the major RF functions within wireless handsets. The company's established wireless systems and mixed-signal/analog expertise will result in RF portfolio development that will achieve optimal RF function partitioning and integration. As a result, these devices will enable wireless systems to be smaller, lighter and less expensive, while providing longer talk and standby times from a single battery charge. For additional design flexibility, the RF products also support non-TI baseband components.

Complementary solutions

The Radio Frequency Section

TI's wireless communications technology platform provides the framework to ensure that the company's RF ICs and baseband solutions are architecturally matched to minimize design complexity and reduce power consumption. Because of this strategy's success, TI's digital baseband platform has been incorporated into more than half the digital phones manufactured worldwide for the past two years. The addition of RF ICs expands TI's product line to provide a comprehensive DSP portfolio for wireless communications systems.
