PMOS low dropout voltage regulator

The TPS71025, TI's new PMOS low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator, provides reduced power consumption and longer battery life in handheld and portable battery-powered systems such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), palmtops, cellular phones and other systems using the emerging 2.5-V logic functions.

Closeup of the TPS71025

The device, the latest addition to TI's PMOS LDO family, offers an advantage over similar products. Bipolar regulators use a PNP pass element, the base current of which is directly proportional to the load current through the regulator. The TPS71025 uses a voltage-controlled pass transistor that results in low quiescent currents (typically 292 uA), which remain constant over the regulator's full specified 500mA output load. The PMOS pass transistor also acts as a low-value resistor Ñ less than one ohm -- so the dropout voltage is extremely low when compared to conventional bipolar LDOs.

TPS71025 20-pin TSSOP $1.19
8-pin SOIC $1.11
8-pin DIP $1.11

Suggested resale pricing in U.S. dollars in 1K quantity.

TPS71025 features

  • Fixed 2.5-V output, wide load range 0 to 500mA
  • Very low dropout: 95mV max at 100mA
  • Low quiescent current: 292 uA typical
  • Shutdown mode: 0.5 uA max standby current ±2 percent output tolerance over full range
