Philips, TI team to provide first co-op source for PicoGate logic products

Texas Instruments and Philips Semiconductors have joined to create the world's first cooperative source for PicoGate Logic, the industry's smallest IC package.

PicoGate Logic's small size allows for easy design into crowded board layouts or simple insertion for last-minute modifications. These five-pin, single-gate devices simplify routing and eliminate dependence on intricate line-layout patterns in a design.

Applications for this small packaging include telecommunications, computer and consumer products. More specifically, tomorrow's sub-sub notebook computers, handheld TVs, video games and cameras will require the small size and functionality the PicoGate Logic provides.

Using the SOT353, five-pin package -- which is 10 times smaller than a standard SO14 and one of the world's smallest housings -- Philips Semiconductors will provide a range of PicoGate Logic functions in 5 V HC/HCT and 3 V CMOS. TI will provide the same functions in the AHC/AHCT families.

"The PicoGate Logic products from Philips Semiconductors and Texas Instruments use the same die and are pin-to-pin compatible, providing designers with good options with very tight specs," analyst Will Booth said in Insight Onsite. "This announcement represents both the first PicoGate Logic offering in the Western Hemisphere, and the global market's only alternative source. Designers need options; with the market size for PicoGate Logic, there is definitely a need for a reliable supply."

Philips began shipping 5V HCT gates, inverters and analog switches in September. Samples from TI and its authorized distributors of 5V AHC/T gates and inverters are expected to be available later in the year.
