3-V LDO regulator and voltage supervisor

The TPS7330, an integrated voltage supervisor and low dropout regulator designed for 3.0-V systems, is the newest member of TI's TPS73xx product family. It's a simple solution for systems needing longer battery life and a supply voltage supervisor. The device is optimized for power sensitive applications such as cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), digital cameras and other low-power portable systems.

The device features low dropout voltage and quiescent currents made possible by replacing the conventional bipolar PNP pass transistor with a PMOS element. The TPS7330 has a maximum dropout voltage of 52 mV at 100 mA load and a quiescent current of only 340 uA that remains constant over the full 500 mA load range, even in dropout. A micropower shutdown more further reduces supply current to just 0.5 uA, offering additional flexibility for power distribution and load management. The micropower operation and low dropout voltages significantly reduce system power consumption thereby extending battery life. Precision regulation is achieved with a maximum output voltage tolerance of 2 percent over full line, load and temperature conditions.

TPS7330 features

  • Integrated supply voltage supervisor and LDO regulator
  • Low dropout voltage (52 mV at 100 mA)
  • Low quiescent current, 340 uA, independent of load
  • Shutdown mode (0.5 uA typ)
  • Wide load range: 0 to 150 mA
  • characterized for operation from -40 C to 125 C

The TPS73xx family integrates a supply voltage supervisor (SVS) and low dropout voltage regulator (LDO) for simple, seamless operation with fewer components. A typical battery-powered system includes the LDO for the longer battery life and SVS to reset the microprocessor when the battery voltage drops.

Building on the TPS71xx and the TPS72xx families of ultra-low dropout regulators, the TPS73xx include on-board precision output voltage monitoring. An active-low RESET signal is asserted automatically during power up and power down, or any time the output drops below the specified threshold voltage. Once the output voltage is reestab-lished, RESET stays low for a preset 200 ms (typ) time delay to ensure the system is stable before enabling sensitive circuits.
